Strengthening EU market access for battery manufacturers

Stockholm, Sweden, 28 January 2026: Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce that its Swedish laboratory - Intertek Semko AB - has achieved accreditation towards becoming a Notified Body under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

This milestone places Intertek among the first organisations accredited under the new regulation and further strengthens its role as a key compliance partner for battery manufacturers seeking access to the EU market.

The EU Battery Regulation came into force on 18 August 2025 and establishes a harmonised legislative framework designed to improve the sustainability, safety and supply chain transparency of batteries of all sizes and chemistries placed on the EU market. Over the coming years, the regulation introduces a phased set of stringent requirements, covering the entire battery lifecycle: from raw material sourcing to safety, labelling, and end-of-life considerations.

For battery manufacturers, EU Battery Regulation compliance means navigating a wide range of obligations, from supply chain due diligence audits to the implementation of a battery passport. While some requirements can be met through self-declaration, others require independent verification by a Notified Body. The latter includes carbon footprint declarations (mandatory from 2027), minimum recycled content declarations (mandatory from 2028), and supply chain due diligence for critical raw materials (mandatory from August 2027).

As a long-standing global leader in battery advisory and testing services, Intertek has supported manufacturers with EU Battery Regulation readiness since the regulation was first proposed. With the accreditation towards Notified Body status, the company now expands its offering to cover mandatory third-party conformity assessment.

“Many manufacturers find the EU Battery Regulation complex and difficult to navigate,” said Andreas Nyman, Energy Storage & Battery Specialist at Intertek. “Our role is to provide clarity, helping customers understand which requirements apply to them and when. By combining regulatory advisory services with advanced performance, durability, safety, and abuse testing, and Notified Body conformity assessment services, we will be able to offer a streamlined, single-source solution for EU Battery Regulation compliance.”

Timo Lieber, Vice President ECA Electrical and Innovation, Managing Director, Electrical and TT Nordics & General Manager, Intertek Semko AB, added: “Being among the first to achieve accreditation to become a Notified Body under the EU Battery Regulation reflects our proactive approach and long-term commitment to the battery industry. This accreditation enables us to deliver a truly comprehensive compliance solution, helping manufacturers reduce complexity and accelerate time-to-market in the EU.”
